Lost and Found

In our English lessons we have been looking at a story, by Oliver Jeffers, called Lost and Found.

The story goes a bit like this:

"Once there was a boy and one day he found a penguin at his door..."

We began our work with a couple of pictures taken from the animated version of this story.  We followed a trail of fish to a picture of a rather cute penguin and raised questions as to why the penguin was here.

The next picture was of the penguin on a little boy's doorstep, which led to further questions.

We decided to find out more and held a press conference with the boy.  After that we made our own TV news reports.  Watch some of our clips below.

A flightless visitor to our airport

A mysterious package was left at the airport today.  A small box containing a little penguin now known as Chezzy.

Nobody knows how he got here, who he came with or even what to do with him.

We have been feeding him sardines and is being looked after by Mrs Ketley.

Keep watching to find out what happens to Chezzy the mysterious penguin.

More Sustainability Week Fun

Keeping with the flying machine theme, we made models out of recycled materials and held our very own RoydonFlugtag.

Flugtag means flying day in German.  We pinched the idea from the Redbull adverts.  We also watched Dick Dastardly and Muttley in their flying machines cartoon to give us some inspiration.

Have a look at some of our recycled flying machines and see if you can work out what they have been made from.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it's a dolphin made by Willow
An interesting design by Amber
A well designed and made flying machine by Kieran
Alfie included a handy parachute to help it fly.
But the winning flying machine was made by Lylie.  It flew the furthest in two test flights.

School Council Representatives

Meet our School Council Reps

The children in 4/3KG held a vote and elected Evie from Year 3 and Charlie from Year 4 to represent them at School Council meetings.

If you have anything you think needs to be discussed or any good ideas for our school then have a chat to our School Council reps.

Sustainability Week Fun

Have a look at some of the fantastic hats that were made for the Sustainability Week Fun Day on 20th October 2011.

See if you can recognise anyone from 4/3KG

Everybody made a fanatastic effort and we really did have a a fun day at school.

Fun with FORCES

In science lessons we have been learning about forces.  A force can be a push, a pull, a twist or a turn.  We found out about friction which is created when two surfaces rub together.

Try rubbing your hands together.  What do you feel?

That's right! They should feel like they are getting warmer because there is a high level of friction.

Some friction can be useful like when you want to stop your bike.  When you apply the brakes the rubber wheels rub against the road surface creating high friction to stop your bike.

If you were going down a slide would you want there to be a high or low amount of friction?

We made some flying machines to show how friction works.

You each piece of string horizontally then the machine flies up the string creating friction.

Then we moved on to looking at air resistance.  This effects how things fly through the air.  We found out that a flat sheet of A4 paper would take more time to reach the ground than a screwed up ball of paper.  This is because the sheet of paper has a larger surface area so the force of air resistance is greater.

We made some Zappy Zoomers to see how the shape of flying machines affects the way they fly.  They have to aerodynamic with a narrower end at the front.  We took them outside to test them.

  To be continued......

3D Flying Machines

                                                    3D Flying Machines

4/3 Set 2 maths class have been making some amazing 3d models of space shuttles and aeroplanes.  They are all made of paper and sellotape they were really fun to make.

We have also been investigating a new set of 3D shapes which we haven't heard of before.

Lowry Style

Lowry Style

We have been looking at paintings by the artist L.S Lowry, who liked to paint pictures of busy places filled with people.  We found out that he was a rent collector who would sketch anyboby he found interesting to watch whilst doing his rounds.

His work inspired us to create our own pictures of busy places.  Where better to start than our very own playground.

The children in 4/3KG created their own individual pitcutres of the playground using art straws as matchstick figures.

If Lowry was alive today, how would he paint a scene at a busy airport?

For homework the children made some sketches to give us some ideas of what the scene might look like.

We created a scene outside an airport in sunny Spain using peg dolls as people.

This photo really doesn't do the display any justice so please pop in and have a look!

Roydon International Airport

Roydon Airways and Airline Discovery

During September two brand new airlines launched their first flights to Spain.  The newly created airlines provided around 60 new jobs for people living in the local area
(or people from the 4/3 classes!)
The 4/3s chose whether they would like to be cabin crew, pilots, co-pilots, baggage handlers, ticket agents, security or immigration officers.  All new members of staff took part in training programs and helped to design their own uniforms.

The cabin crew had to learn about safety procedures during a flight. Each airline prepared their own safety video for the passengers.
Safety Briefing by Airline Discovery - Ellie, Olivia C and Oscar

The first flight was staffed by the children from 4/3KG whilst 4/3B were the passengers.
